Polluters
TRANSPORTATION
The transportation of people and goods is an
important cause of air pollution. Indeed, every day millions of people use
their car, motorcycle, others travel by plane and the goods are transported by
trucks and huge cargo ships. (Boats)
In short, anything powered by gasoline,
diesel or kerosene pollutes!
AGRICULTURE
The manufacture of fertilizers for
agriculture is a cause of pollution of the air we breathe as well as the
intensive breeding of animals such as cattle (cows) or pigs (pigs).
DOMESTIC ACTIVITIES
We are all polluters of the air! Today's life
pushes us every day to pollute the planet. For example, we generate pollution
every time we use our car, turn on air conditioning, use electricity, buy
products that cause pollution for their manufacture, or when we we use solvents
for nails, for painting ... etc. We must also think about sorting our waste to
recylcer and avoid overloading our garbage cans that will be burned or buried
and will generate significant air pollution. Finally, in winter, we heat our
homes with gas heating, fireplaces, stoves or electric radiators.
INDUSTRY
The manufacture of chemicals, metals,
fertilizers, perfumes, medicines, plastics, cement ... etc. All these
industries release into the air many gases and dusts dangerous for the
environment. Also, energy production such as electricity or refineries of
petroleum products contribute to air pollution.
Pollutants
Pollutants are numerous. They come in two
forms:
- 90% gases
- solid particles at 10% (pollen, dust,
fumes)
Name of the gases
Chemical formula
sources
chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)
?
These gases were used before as propellants
in deodorants, insecticides, paints, etc. They are now banned but persist in
the atmosphere for years ...
methane
CH4
The main emitting sources are: coal mines,
garbage dumps, livestock and town gas distribution. This gas contributes
significantly to the greenhouse effect.
carbon monoxide
CO
This gas is poisonous and can be lethal, it
is produced by incomplete combustions of city gas, fuel when a boiler or stove
are poorly adjusted for example. It is also issued by motorized vehicles.
carbon dioxide
CO2
The proportion of this gas in the atmosphere
increases daily. It is rejected by the breathing of living beings but
especially it is produced by the combustion of petroleum products in thermal
engines ...
nitrogen oxides
NOx
ozone
O3
We are familiar with the ozone layer (30 km)
that protects us from the sun's UV rays. But sometimes ozone is formed at low
altitude and the latter is toxic to humans. It often appears in polluted large
cities on hot days.
sulfur dioxide
SO2
This gas comes from refineries, pulp mills or
during the manufacture of sulfuric acid. It is also the source of acid rain.
The effects of air pollution
On the Man
Air pollution causes many disorders: cough,
respiratory discomfort, irritation of the respiratory tract, allergies, asthma
or frequent bronchitis. Some gases such as carbon monoxide can cause headaches,
dizziness or even death.
On buildings
Buildings are naturally degraded by the
phenomenon of erosion. However, pollution accelerates this phenomenon of wear,
for example because of the acid rain that gnaws the limestone. In addition,
facades in the city are blackened by particles and car exhaust.
On the fauna and flora
Acid rain, disappearance of animal species,
forest dieback, global warming, hole in the ozone layer.
What to do to fight against air pollution?
Simple actions that can limit our emissions
of gaseous pollutants:
avoid using the car systematically for very
short journeys
avoid overheating the house in winter
do not abuse the air conditioning in the
summer auto
do not buy aerosol cans but rather vaporizers
sort my waste to avoid cremation
unnecessarily, it is better to recycle what is recyclable
limit speed and acceleration by car to
consume less
have your boiler set every year to operate in
optimal conditions
have solar panels installed on the roof of my
house
