Bahrain Kingdom of Bahrain is a
small Arabian island country located near the west coast of the Persian Gulf in
the Middle East. Composing an archipelago,
most of the territory is the
island of Bahrain.
to the north and the Gulf of
Bahrain separates the island from the Qatar peninsula to the southeast. In
2010,
the Bahraini population is
estimated at 1 234 571 persons, including more than 660 000 expatriates (ie 54%
of the population) 4,5.
Bahrain was one of the emblematic
places of the ancient civilization of Dilmun before falling under the
successive domination of the Parthian and Sasanian empires.
The region is converted to Islam
in 628, making it one of the first Muslim countries. After a period of
domination by the Arabs,
Bahrain is occupied by the
Portuguese in 1521, before being conquered by Shah Abbas I of the Persian
Safavid Empire in 1602. In 1783, the Arab tribe Bani Utbah,
from the center of the Arabian
Peninsula, seizes the island and the country has since been ruled by the Al
Khalifa royal family.
In the late 1800s, Bahrain became
a British protectorate, and it was only in 1971, following the British
withdrawal from the region in the late 1960s, that Bahrain declared its
independence.
The country is constituted in
kingdom under the impulse of Emir Hamed ben Issa al-Khalifa, who becomes King
Hamed II. The political system is a monarchy.
Since the beginning of 2011, the
country has experienced sustained and repeated demonstrations inspired by the
Arab Spring movements,
women, teenagers. But the closure
of the regime in an increasingly severe repression leads to an escalation of
violence on both sides, with the development of armed groups with more and more
elaborate action on one side and a closure democratic options ever greater6,7.
The oil was discovered in Bahrain
in 1932, for the first time on the west coast of the Gulf. Since the end of the
twentieth century, the country has sought to diversify its economy by investing
in the banking and tourism sectors.
The capital, Manama, hosts
many financial structures, such as Bahrain World Trade Center and Bahrain
Financial Harbor. Qal'at al-Bahrain
(site of the ancient
capital of the ancient civilization of Dilmun) and pearl heritage of Bahrain
were ranked among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2005 and 2012
respectively.
The Bahrain Grand Prix is taking place on
the Sakhir International Circuit in the center of the country.
