The
dangers of smoking and tobacco
Smoking
causes or aggravates many diseases, many of which can significantly decrease
the life span. Today, tobacco is the leading cause of preventable death: every
year it is estimated to cause 5.4 million deaths worldwide. In France, tobacco
kills about 66,000 people each year and is one of the direct causes of millions
of cases of cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Tobacco,
a deadly poison
What is
dangerous in tobacco is the very numerous chemical substances that are
naturally found in it or that are added by industrialists: tars, mercury,
arsenic, acetone, hydrogen cyanide, etc. Transformed by combustion, carried
into the lungs by smoke, they enter the blood and cause heart and blood vessel
diseases, as well as many cancers.
In
addition, these substances exert their effects directly on the skin, mouth,
throat and bronchi. Even without swallowing the smoke, the risk of cancer of
these organs is increased and, for the skin, the signs of aging appear much
faster.
Nicotine
is not toxic as such, but it creates the addiction and connects the smoker.
Cigarette,
cigar, pipe, water pipe: tobacco is always harmful!
Contrary
to popular belief, the burning of tobacco is dangerous regardless of the mode
of consumption used: cigarette, pipe, water pipe or hookah, cigar and
artificial flavored cigarettes.
Even
chewable (chique) or wedge (Scandinavian snuff) forms are responsible for
cancers of the lips, mouth, tongue or throat.
