Air
pollution or atmospheric pollution
Environment
Urban
air pollution is generated by transport, industry and energy production. It is
manifested by the presence of fine particles (aerosols, especially carbon) and
urban smog (including tropospheric ozone) clearly visible.
Air
pollution is worsening almost everywhere in the world: the inhabitants of more
than 90% of cities breathe polluted air, toxic for their cardiovascular and
respiratory health. Indeed, between 2010 and 2016, concentrations of air
pollutants have worsened in almost 70% of cities worldwide, especially in low-
and middle-income countries (The 2018 report of the Lancet Countdown on health
and climate change: shaping the health of nations for centuries to come,
28/11/2018)
As
a result, on average each year, air pollution causes the untimely deaths of 7
million people worldwide, including 600,000 in Europe and 48,000 in France.
Finally,
while a population of over 1.7 billion people still depends on manure, wood,
crop residues and coal to meet their basic energy needs, indoor air pollution
homes would be responsible for more than 1.6 million deaths per year, according
to estimates. This pollution particularly affects women and children, who spend
more time at home.
A
scourge too often passed over in silence.
