How to fight
against air pollution?
We all
contribute to atmospheric emissions of pollutants. The state, communities and
industry are not the only ones who must act to reduce pollutant emissions. Each
of us will have to make some efforts to protect our environment, our health and
therefore our future.
You can
contribute to the reduction of atmospheric emissions of pollutants in different
ways:
Transportation
:
When buying
the vehicle:
Choose a
model of automobile adapted to your needs which consumes little.
Daily :
Take care of
your car: The interview
oil filter
gasoil
filter
air filter
(clogged air filter = 10% more fuel)
emptying
idle
adjustment
do not
change the setting of the diesel pump
tire
pressure
the
galleries: overconsumption of 10 to 20%
A poorly
tuned car pollutes up to 50 times more than a properly tuned car. By having
your vehicle serviced, you save money and reduce emissions.
Minimize the
use of the car by:
grouping
your shopping in one trip;
arranging
teleconferences;
working at
home (telecommuting), if possible.
Before
moving:
Choose the
most suitable means of transport for your travels
For short
trips, leave your car in the garage.
In the
district: on foot, by bike
From one
district to another: by bike, by bus
To go
further: the car, the bus
In France,
40% of trips are less than 2 km away. These trips made generally cold engine
are very penalizing in terms of air pollution.
A short 500m
drive into town is an 8-minute walk away. Hard to do better by car: traffic
lights, parking difficult and often paying ...
Consider
carpooling: if you take your car, offer the available seats
In order to
help reduce the number of cars on the road, offer the seats available in your
car to those who make the same trip as you. You can save money by sharing fuel
costs.
By car :
1) Slowly
roll the first kms:
Anti-pollution
systems (catalytic converters) are effective only when the engine is hot. The
first kms cold engine uses the engine poorly lubricate and overconsumes 50%
more for the first km and 25% more for the 2nd.
2) Roll
smart
Avoid
congestion by moving if possible outside rush hours.
Consider
traffic information to use the clearest axes.
3) Avoid
creating congestion
Do not block
traffic. Do not enter a congested junction. Do not stop in double file. Do not
interfere with the traffic when you make deliveries.
A car
stopped (even engine off) for 5 minutes can generate blockage of an entire
neighborhood and cause pollution equivalent to that emitted for a journey of
1500 km.
4) Remember
to stop the engine during prolonged stops
In case of
stop more than 10 seconds (deliveries, shopping, tourism, telephone
conversation, ...) I cut the contact.
I realize a
fuel economy, I reduce noise and pollution.
Power
consumption of idling engine: 2 liters per hour.
It is only
the cold start that is expensive in terms of fuel. Once the engine is warm,
turning it off and on again does not cause overconsumption or additional
pollution. Stopping the engine is a reflex to take.
5) Adopt a
flexible and economical driving
Aggressive,
abrupt or too fast driving leads to over-consumption of 30 to 40% and therefore
an increase in pollutant emissions.
6) Do not
abuse air conditioning
Air
conditioning causes fuel consumption of up to 25% in the city, and 10% on the
road and therefore additional pollutant emissions.
5%
overconsumption on the year.
Remember to
close your windows! and take care of its maintenance.
At home
turn off the
lights when you leave a room and save electricity (65% of the electricity
produced in Reunion is of fossil origin);
avoid the
use of solvent-based products (oil paint, gasoline, turpentine, pesticides and
others). Otherwise, handle them carefully and close the containers tightly. If
you have to throw them away, do it at the rubbish ...
Prefer
recycled products and opt for sorting. Recycled products save energy and reduce
the amount of waste destined for incineration, a source of air pollution.
