THE COMPASS: HOW DOES IT WORK?
The compass is a reliable and
lightweight instrument to always keep in your backpack!
Known for a very long time, it
was invented in China. The principle is very simple: it contains a small
magnetic needle placed on a pivot. One end of the needle indicates the North
(and the other indicates the South). Most often the tip that indicates the
North is the red part of the needle.
COMPASS
An orientation compass is made of
transparent plastic to be able to see the map when it is put on it. It has a
graduated rotating base that allows memorizing directions.
The dial of the compass is
divided from 0 to 360 in a clockwise direction. A circle has 360 degrees or 360
degrees.
The NORD is 0 or 360 degrees. The
EST is 90 degrees. The SUD is 180 degrees. The west is 270 degrees.
Each 90-degree section is called
a quadrant. You only have to imagine a pizza cut in four equal parts. So each
part is a quadrant.
On some models, each quadrant is
divided into two. Degrees within these new divisions indicate either Northeast
(NE), Southeast (SE), Southwest (SW), or NW (NW). A person moving to a
220-degree survey would go south and west, or south-west.
HOW IT WORKS ?
The Earth contains large amounts
of metal at its center. The rotation of this mass of metal creates what is
called a magnetic field. And the magnets follow the lines of fields.
If we
made a diagram it would look a little like what you see on the right, but these
lines go approximately from the North Pole to the South Pole; therefore the
needle takes the direction North-South.
