THE RISKS OF ACTIVE SMOKING
In France, smoking is the leading cause of preventable death, with around
73,000 deaths each year. On average, one in two regular smokers dies
prematurely from the causes of their smoking.
There is no threshold below which smoking does not represent a risk.
Indeed, the risk of being a victim of lung cancer depends on the number of
cigarettes that are smoked each day, but also on the age of smoking. The only
effective way to reduce this risk is stopping smoking.
SMOKING DISEASES ARE VERY NUMEROUS
> One in three cancers is due to smoking. The best known is lung cancer,
90% of which is related to active smoking and 5% to passive smoking.
But other cancers are also caused by tobacco: throat, mouth, lips,
pancreas, kidneys, bladder, uterus. Esophageal cancer is more common in
association with tobacco and alcohol.
> Active smoking can also be the cause of cardiovascular disease:
smoking is one of the main risk factors for myocardial infarction. Strokes,
lower extremity arteritis, aneurysms, high blood pressure are also linked, in
part, to tobacco smoke. Vascular involvement can also cause erectile
dysfunction.
> Chronic bronchitis is mainly due to smoking. This disease progresses
to respiratory failure if smoking is not stopped. Emphysema (excessive and
permanent dilation of the pulmonary alveoli, with rupture of their septa) is
also a disease often related to smoking.
> Other pathologies are linked or are aggravated by smoking: gastritis,
peptic ulcers, type II diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia,
eczema, psoriasis, lupus, ENT infections ( Nose - throat) and dental, cataract
and AMD (Age - Related Muscle Degeneration) may result in blindness. Not to
mention periodontitis, gum disease that causes loosening and loss of teeth.
Smoking during pregnancy carries many risks for the pregnancy itself and
for the development of the fetus.
