Air
pollution:
Air
pollution is the degradation of the air we breathe because of pollutants that
are found in the atmosphere. Peaks of air pollution often occur in summer. The
main air pollutants are fine particles, sulfur dioxide (SO2), ozone, nitrogen
oxides (NO and NO2), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), etc.
Air
pollution is mainly due to transport (light or heavy vehicles) and combustion
plants (including biomass combustion).
Dioxins are
a family of 210 compounds of which 17 are toxic. At least one dioxin is carcinogenic
to humans. Dioxins are produced during combustion in fires or refuse
incinerators.
According to
the French Agency for Environmental Health Safety (AFSSE), air pollution,
linked for nearly a third to the polluting emissions of cars, would be
responsible each year for the death of 6,500 to 9,500 people in France.
It seems
that since the awareness of greenhouse gases and their influence on the
climate, the taking into account of air pollution is "out of
fashion", or even completely forgotten. What about nitrogen oxides and
carbon monoxide?
