Air
pollution in a nutshell
Why does the
air arouse our attention?
We often
hear about peak pollution or simply pollution. Indeed, the air we breathe is
not always of good quality. Especially in urbanized areas as well as in
mountain valleys.
The air we
breathe is considered responsible for 48,000 deaths in France.
There is a
lot of thought about the impact of pollution on our health during pollution
peaks, but we must know that it is the regular and long-term pollution, even at
moderate levels of pollution, which has the greatest impact on the health.
What is
polluting the air?
Several
pollutants alter the quality of our air. We have three particularly troubling
ones today: fine particles, nitrogen dioxide and tropospheric ozone.
Where do the
pollution come from?
The first
sources of pollution are varied:
industries
(gaseous releases, dusts, etc.) that account for 80% of sulfur dioxide
emissions;
agriculture
(fertilizers, pesticides, livestock manure, etc.) responsible for 97% of
ammonia emissions;
heating
(wood, oil, etc.) responsible for more than 90% of fine particulate emissions
in the residential sector;
burning of
green waste. The fine particles emitted by 50 kg of plants burned in the open
air are equal to those emitted by about 13 000 km traveled by a recent car;
transport
(mainly road traffic), which is responsible for about 90% of the emissions of
primary particles and nitrogen oxides related to road transport come from
diesel vehicles.
Air
pollution can also come from natural phenomena such as volcanic eruptions,
fires or lightning ... but in much smaller quantities!
Focus on
transport
In urban
areas, where almost 40% of daily trips by car are less than 3 km away, road
traffic is a very important source of pollution. Indeed, these trips are 2
times more polluting than a trip of greater distance (overconsumption of fuel
when the engine is cold, frequent stops and restarts, etc.).
How can we
change things?
By taking
public transportation, cycling, skating or using one's feet (30 minutes of
moderate daily physical activity are good for your health!);
being
tempted by carpooling if the car is absolutely necessary;
if you have
the license, pay attention to your driving: slower, less brutally it is good
for the planet, because it limits polluting emissions!
