Of all the qualities (Socrates said the
"virtues") that we must awake in our lifetime, tolerance is one of
the most important, because it is the guarantor of harmonious relations between
individuals. On the contrary, intolerance is a vector of discord, and even of
conflicts and wars. To be convinced of this, it suffices to observe the state
of society and the world in general. As long as human beings are intolerant to
one another, harmony and peace will be impossible on Earth. Unfortunately, not
enough of them strive to be tolerant in their judgments and behavior.
But what is tolerance? In general, it is the ability
to accept that others think and live differently from us. This is not obvious,
because under the impetus of our ego, but also our education, our culture and
our experience, we tend to believe that our ideas, opinions and convictions are
better and more accurate than those of others. This results in misunderstandings
and oppositions which, in extreme cases, may lead individuals to quarrel, to
fight and even to kill each other. In this respect, intolerance is one of the
major causes of violence in all its forms.
Among the areas where intolerance is most devastating,
we find politics and religion. It is not by chance that most of the wars that
have punctuated the history of humanity have been caused by political or
religious differences. If this is the case, it is because everyone has their
own beliefs in these two areas, which tend to be dogmatic or even sectarian. It
is also because they exert a great influence on life in society and leave no
one indifferent. Yet no political party holds the monopoly of the truth.
Likewise, no religion holds the monopoly of faith. Therefore, one must know how
to be tolerant and draw from the ideas of others an opportunity to challenge
ours.
A warning is nevertheless necessary: to be tolerant does not
mean to tolerate everything. Indeed, there are behaviors and words that are not
acceptable. In general, this is the case of those who undermine human dignity,
whether racist, sexist, xenophobic, homophobic or otherwise. To be tolerant of
them is a mark, not of wisdom, but of weakness. We must not only not accept and
condemn them, but also oppose them as much as possible. Failure to do so would
amount to endorsing them and thereby trivializing them, not to mention
normalizing them.
Historically, the Old and Mystical Order of the
Rose-Cross has for motto: "The widest tolerance in the strictest
independence". In application of this motto, it is tolerant and even
respectful of all philosophical, religious, cultural, political and other
movements, and therefore, of course, that these movements do not undermine
human dignity through their ideals. their teachings, doctrines and practices.
Moreover, A.M.O.R.C. is not bound to any of them, which explains why it
includes among its members men and women of all nationalities, of all
religions, of all social categories, etc.
