Traveling
by car?
During
my first world tour, my friend Solène and I had the chance to visit New Zealand
by car. It has been so expensive to rent a car for two and sleep in it than to
travel in a bag. Following this magnificent road trip by car, I hope to
enlighten you on the subject if you have never thought about it.
Why
travel by car, what do I gain from it?
Traveling
by car gives you the opportunity to go where you want when you want. It is able
to go further than in bag or bus, or at least more easily. It is also no longer
having to deal with the schedules of buses or trains.
It's
changing places whenever you want, and stop when you want. It is to feel free
to improvise the trip to the nearest second.
Sometimes
when we are in the bus, we pass in front of nice little corners where we would
have to stop for a break and a small photo, but the bus continues while in the
car we stop. In New Zealand there are days when we stopped every 15 minutes!
To
travel by car is also to be able to choose in front of which point of view we
will fall asleep. It's so good to wake up to nature. In addition to that, we
make the price of the car profitable by saving the nights at the hotel.
The
negative points
In
some countries it is illegal to sleep in your vehicle, when it is not badly
watched, the fine can be expensive.
For
small budgets, in countries with long distances, gasoline can make a good hole
in the budget.
In
developed countries, pay attention to fines, in others to corrupt police.
In
vehicle we miss the atmosphere of public transport in the country, which is a
face of the people interesting in his life every day.
Tips
if you take a vehicle
Make
inquiries before leaving on the international driving license outside the EU
zone. Once out of France, you will not be able to get one. You will need to
rent a car.
In
some countries (like South East Asia) I think there is no need to rent a car,
there are many buses and for cheap, the accommodation is easy to access ...
Get
information before driving on the country's highway code.
If
your trip is a loop, you return to the starting point, no problem to make the
car. But if you want to make the car elsewhere in the country, find out there
are agencies that have "locals" all over the country. You can take a
car at point A and return to point B.
Check
with the agency before taking the car, all the sores of the vehicle and write
them together.
If
your budget is tight you can always go to an agency and ask for a quote and the
fuel consumption of the car. Calculate roughly how much you will spend on a car
(rent + gas) and compare to a trip backpacker (bus / train between destinations
+ hotels for the night + small means of transport to get to the place of
visit). For some countries, the car will cost so much (that's how with Solene
we ended up visiting New Zealand by car!).
During
your stay by car, watch public showers, they are rare. Otherwise we parked in
front of a campsite and used the showers at the campsite. In the worst case, it
is possible to take a shower for a few rooms in a hotel if you ask.
For
Internet connections, go to the libraries, often they make available wifi
connections ... or tourist offices.
Maybe
this article will make you want to take a break from public transport for a
road trip by car? In general in your travels, how do you move?
