How to live happily: The 15 mistakes not
to commit
How to live happily: a story to
illustrate
The two monks and the cow.
Early twentieth century, in a French
countryside.
Two monks are walking. A novice and his
superior.
The youngest listens attentively to the
advice of his superior, more experienced.
During their walk, they see in the
distance a dilapidated farm. They are approaching.
A peasant with his head down, his back
veiled in rags, and very thin, asks them what they want.
"My good friend," said the superior
monk, "what is going on here? "
"Everything looks decrepit and you do not
seem to be very happy, right? "
"You know, Brother, here it's not easy. We
are a family of 4 people. I am here with my wife and 2 children. We have an old
cow who gives us milk. So we feed ourselves with his milk.
And then, if there is any left, we sell
it on the market and with the little money that it leaves us we buy a little
bread. It's not easy, you know, Brother! "
"I understand," the monk tells him,
and the older man signals the novice to continue on their way.
how to live happily
On the way they meet the famous cow,
alone, grazing. She is awake and tired.
This is the cow of the farm in which they
have just stopped. The monk then says to the novice:
"Take the cow and throw it in the
precipice! "
"But finally, Brother, I can not do that! "
"Do you want to listen to my advice or not? "
"Of course, I want to listen to you and
learn. But finally these poor people have only this cow to live and you want to
throw it in the precipice! "
"Do not ask yourself a question, and throw
this cow! "
The novice complied
...
Four years later, the two monks are
walking again in the same area. The elder says to the youngest:
"Let's see what became of the peasants who
had a cow. You remember, I asked you to throw it in the precipice. When he
arrives at the farm, they are very surprised. The farm is superbly renovated,
corn, wheat and barley crops surround the farm. The peasant has regained his
tone and weight, and he is much more smiling.
"Hello, my good friend," said the
monk, "we had been in the area four years ago and you were not going very
well. but now it seems to be much better.
What happened
? "
"Well, brother, before, we had a cow who
gave us some milk for our sustenance, and then she fell into a precipice. So we
had to take our life in hand !!! "
And what is your cow? What's stopping you
from moving forward and being happy? It may be a belief, a preconceived idea
about happiness? Maybe you are hanging on to something that is not that
extraordinary? Maybe it's hard to let go?
